Material Exploration

Now after sketches I pushed myself towards material to get more precise and possible outcomes. Here are my exploration of material in pictures.

These are some of the material explorations and swatches that are formed from exploration.

Visual Exploration

I sketched my ideas of my essence in my sketchbook. Let’s see how I derived and worked on my essence.

As I started sketching, ideas started flowing and I came through many outcomes that would not be possible if I had only thought about them.

Inspiration board/ Essence

When we study something we get to learn more about that, this is the nature of everything. In the same manner, we get inspired by the things that we think are interesting. While studying the art of marble inlay I found out some awesome inspirations which left me awe-inspired. Some of the essence that I derived from inspirations are Symmetry, geometry, balance and insertion. Below is the inspiration board that I have created from images that I thought are inspiring for my art.

Example of symmetry and balance in marble 2.jpg (2007, December 11).

As we can see that in the above image, pieces of stones are inlaid in the marble in an absolute symmetry.

We can see the example of geometry and balance that is created in the above image.

From the imagery research of inspirations, I now started sketching and working on essence on my sketchbook.

Art of Marble Inlay-Agra

Now I am going to describe you about the topic of which I am going to make a project on. My topic for the project as described earlier is marble inlay of Agra. I was really surprised when I read about the art. When I researched in depth of the subject I get to know it is awe-inspiring. So let me take you to tour of a beautiful art that still resides in the heart of India.

Marble inlay is originally known as pietra dura, which is an Italian word meaning hard stone. Pietra dura is a pictorial mosaic work using semi-precious stones, inlaid in marble.

Pietra dura is also called Parchin Kari in India. Pietra dura is believed to be of Indian origin but it is Mughal inlay art in India. Marble inlay or Parchin Kari was brought to India by Mughal rulers. It was a remarkable feature of Mughal architecture in India. Inlay art was an instrument of powerful expression in the great age of the Mughal Empire. Marble inlay is practiced in India from 14 generations from down the line. Marble in inlaid with beautiful semi-precious and precious stones.

Below is an example of a table top made up of marble inlay in Agra.

Module Brief

I am in the second semester now. Work is more advanced and harder than the previous semester. This time I have to work on a project that will help me in learning of the design process.
So here I have to research on three topics out of which only one is to be taken forward. The topics can be of any art, craft or movement. For this project, I have selected arts of paper Mache, Batik, and Marble inlay
I have selected marble inlay as my final topic.
Marble inlay is vast subject and has a history of hundreds of years. The art of marble inlay contains thousands of motifs, colors, patterns and tessellations. This project is going to be really interesting as I am going to learn more about the art, artisans and the process.
